It’s close enough to Christmas now that we thought we’d indulge in a festive post. This snowman, built by David Cox at the UK National Physics Laboratory, has to have a claim to being the world’s smallest, standing just 20μm – μm being “micrometers” or millionths of a meter.
For it’s size, it’s pretty darn cool, especially since it has been named a “nanosnowman” by its creators. It has a platinum bead for a nose, the mouth and eyes were cut using a highly focused ion beam, and the whole thing was put together by a “nanomanipulation system”. We don’t really understand what half of that means, but it sounds complicated. And it is quite cute.
