Man-made Lightning

This stuff looks like the kind of thing you can only shoot on a dark night… only it’s humanly produced. Japanese photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto used a van de Graaf generator to put 400,000 volts through a metal table, and this is what came out. The different shots are apparently completely random, dependent on conditions that the artist himself doesn’t understand.

Sugimoto¬†describes the photos as a representation of “the spark of life itself, the lightning that struck the primordial ooze“, which made us giggle, but the shots are still quite brilliant, and certainly original.
